Justina + Max's Hippie Chic Camp Ojiketa Wedding
If you love macrame, flowy organza skirts, bold, yet natural color choices, antiques, and being 100% true to all the things that make you, you. THIS Camp Ojiketa wedding will make you flip. It's the bee's knees. And although it isn't exactly professional to say, it's #dopeAF. Justine and Max are best friends turned lovers. Their relationship has been an exciting adventure for dream chasing. During the wedding planning, they were residing in Colorado, where Max was the Head Brewer for Renegade Brewing Company. NOW, they're back in MN starting their own brewery in St. Paul (can't wait to share more details about that)!
Max fills us in on the proposal story!
"For our engagement, I surprised Justine with a 3-Day mystery trip for her Birthday. I let her know to pack a bag of clothes for mixed weather and to be ready to spend a few hours in the car. I had booked us a room at the Tudor Rose Bed and Breakfast in Salida, Colorado. Justine's Birthday was on Sunday so I filled the weekend with activities in the scenic little mountain-valley town. Justine suspected nothing as Sunday morning rolled around if anything a little disappointed about turning another year older without being committed to the man that she loves. I suggested we take a walk down by the lazy stream that meanders through the town. One final straw to throw her off the trail, I gave her tickets to see Dolly Parton at Red Rocks that summer as a Birthday present. With her suspicions at an all-time low, I led her another 30 feet down the trail before dropping to one knee and asking if she would Marry Me. There was some shouting, a blur, she said “YES!” and here we are."
NOW, onto the wedding details!
The couple rented Camp Ojiketa, for the entire weekend. They had free use of the space and enjoyed celebrating for the entire weekend. About 100 guests stayed in the cabins on the property, so it was a great opportunity for everyone to have extra time with each other.
There were so many cool details from the wedding day that made it memorable for us. The couple was striving for a mashup of rustic, bohemian and hippie, with a nod to their love of beer. Ultimately they wanted something that was unique and intentionally reflected their journey as a couple.
They selected Rocker in Love as their photography team. As part of Rocker in Love's US Wedding Tour, they're on a quest to photograph a wedding in each state, which will soon become a book. How cool is that?!
The only flowers were the wedding party flowers. Justine wanted a cascading, ethereal look with whites, burgundy, and HOPS! Hops were an important element for them (being the beer lovers that they are) and had to be present on her bouquet and his boutonniere. They're actually on Max's bowtie too! Studio Emme rocked the request. Such a drool-worthy result!
We love that they opted for head wreaths for the bridesmaids, instead of the traditional bouquet. They paired beautifully with those amazing skirts - which you won't even believe you can get on Amazon for less than $50! The look was playful, midsummer night festival-ish, and quintessential hippie.
Justina did the macrame backdrop herself for her ceremony and her dad built the frame. It turned out so great! They also elicited help from their friends for everything from the invitations to the rings, and even Justine's two-piece wedding dress (her friend crafted the flowing skirt and she paired it with a fitted white top).
The actual ceremony was officiated by a dear friend as well. And we can't forget to mention that World's Finest band, and Max's friends, came all the way across the country from Portland to play in their wedding!
The decor was very unique, the table tops were designed with lots of glass bottles in brown and green of all shapes, sizes, and textures. Lots of candles, brass, driftwood, forest menagerie vintage woodland animals, succulents, cattail and air plants came together for one of a kind centerpieces. Justine's Aunt owns an antique shop in Iowa, so she brought all of the various items used on the tabletops and around the reception.
Justine & Max's wedding isn't your typical Minnesota wedding, BUT, we think it is a great representation of the state & the amazing people in it. Their wedding day is truly a reflection of the quirkiness that we all inherently have. It reminds of us the Dr. Seuss quote "We are all a little weird and life's a little weird, and when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with ours, we join up with them and fall in mutual weirdness and call it love"
This is part one of a two-part post. Check back soon for their day after "Love Session"!
